With four broad sides, the nut can be easily gripped by pliers or spanners, with less chance of rounding off the bolt when tightening of loosening. They also retain a great level of surface pressure against the surface they are fastening against, which can help prevent unwanted loosening.
These mild steel square-headed nuts are bright zinc plated for an element of corrosion resistance, meaning they are suitable for many applications. They are most commonly combined with square-headed screws and bolts.
